Postmark vs SendGrid (2026): Pricing, Features, Verdict

Choose Postmark if your email is mostly transactional (password resets, receipts, alerts) and you want long message history and separate infrastructure for transactional mail. Choose SendGrid if you want lower prices at volume, a dedicated IP below 300,000 emails a month, or a built-in marketing product. At 100,000 emails a month, SendGrid costs $34.95 and Postmark's cheapest covering plan costs $115.

Last validated: September 2026. Prices and limits below were checked against Postmark's and Twilio SendGrid's official pricing pages and docs, linked in References.

How much do Postmark and SendGrid cost?

Postmark is cheaper only at the entry level. From 50,000 emails a month up, SendGrid's Email API costs a fraction of Postmark's price.

Postmark pricing

Postmark's three paid plans differ in features and overage rates. At each volume tier, Pro and Platform cost a little more than Basic and add inbound processing, longer optional retention, and lower overage:

Monthly volumeBasicProPlatform
10,000$15$16.50$18
50,000$55$60.50$66
125,000$115$126.50$138
300,000$245$269.50$294
Overage per 1,000, 10,000 to 125,000 tiers$1.80$1.30$1.20
Overage per 1,000, 300,000 tier$1.70$1.25$1.15

The free developer plan covers 100 emails a month with no overage. Postmark's slider jumps from 50,000 to 125,000, so a team sending 100,000 emails either buys the 125,000 tier or pays overage on the 50,000 tier. On Pro, both paths cost about the same ($126.50 or $125.50).

SendGrid pricing

SendGrid no longer has a free plan. Since March 25, 2025, new accounts get a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day; after it ends, sending stops until you pick a paid plan. Twilio announced on May 27, 2025 that the old free plans would be retired.

Marketing Campaigns is a separate plan, from $15 a month for 5,000 contacts and 15,000 marketing emails.

Verdict: SendGrid is much cheaper from 50,000 emails a month. Postmark wins only for very low volumes, where its $15 plan and free developer tier undercut SendGrid's $19.95 minimum.

Deliverability

Neither provider can guarantee inbox placement. Authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), list quality, and consistent sending matter more than the provider; our email deliverability guide covers the setup. What the providers control is who you share sending reputation with.

Postmark runs transactional and broadcast Message Streams on separate infrastructure and IP ranges, so a newsletter complaint spike doesn't hurt the IP reputation behind your password resets. Domain reputation is still shared if both streams send from the same domain, so Postmark recommends a separate subdomain for broadcasts.

SendGrid Essentials sends from shared IP pools, so other senders' behavior can affect you. Pro includes a dedicated IP, which isolates your reputation but means you have to warm it up and keep volume steady.

Verdict: Postmark's stream separation gives small and mid-size senders IP-level isolation without a dedicated IP. SendGrid gets you there on Pro.

Features and developer experience

Both offer a REST API, SMTP relay, webhooks for delivery events, and server-side templates.

Postmark strengths:

  • 45 days of message history by default, with full content, which helps support teams answer "I never got the email" weeks later. Pro and Platform can extend it up to 365 days.
  • Message Streams that keep transactional and broadcast traffic apart by design.
  • Inbound processing on Pro and Platform, turning incoming email into JSON webhooks.

SendGrid strengths:

  • Subusers and single sign-on on Pro, useful for agencies or companies sending for several brands.
  • Marketing Campaigns, with drag-and-drop and code editors, segmentation, A/B testing, automation, and signup forms.
  • Inbound Parse for receiving email as webhooks, plus Pro volume tiers up to 2.5 million emails a month.

Verdict: Postmark is the simpler, more focused tool for transactional email. SendGrid covers more ground, including marketing.

Which should you choose?

Choose Postmark if:

  • Your email is almost entirely transactional.
  • You send about 12,000 emails a month or fewer, where Postmark's $15 plan (plus overage) undercuts SendGrid's $19.95 minimum.
  • Support and engineering need weeks of searchable message history.

Choose SendGrid if:

  • You send 50,000 or more emails a month and price matters.
  • You need a dedicated IP before 300,000 emails a month.
  • You want transactional and marketing email under one account, with a visual editor for marketers.

Consider neither if: you want the cheapest raw sending (Amazon SES), a free tier you can ship on (Resend or Mailtrap), or a React-first API (Resend). Our Postmark alternatives and SendGrid alternatives guides compare those options.

Where Dreamlit fits

Dreamlit, the company behind this blog, isn't a sending API, so it doesn't compete with Postmark or SendGrid. For password resets and receipts, pick one of them.

Dreamlit takes activation email off your team's to-do list. Our experts find the gaps between signup and paid, run the emails that close them, and are accountable for the numbers. You get a weekly report on what moved. It fits products with 500 or more signups a month.

If what you actually want is more activated users rather than another email API, see how Dreamlit works.

Frequently asked questions

Is Postmark better than SendGrid?

For purely transactional email, many teams prefer Postmark: it keeps 45 days of message history and runs transactional and broadcast mail on separate infrastructure. SendGrid is better value at volume and adds dedicated IPs, subusers, and a full marketing product.

Is Postmark cheaper than SendGrid?

Only at the entry level. Postmark Basic costs $15 for 10,000 emails versus SendGrid's $19.95 for 50,000. At 50,000 emails Postmark costs $55 versus $19.95, and at 100,000 it costs $115 (its 125,000-email tier) versus $34.95.

Does Postmark have a free tier?

Yes. Postmark's free developer plan includes 100 emails a month, never expires, and doesn't allow overage. It's for testing, not production traffic.

Is SendGrid free?

No. SendGrid retired its free plan in 2025. New accounts get a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day, then need a paid plan starting at $19.95 a month.

Can Postmark send marketing emails?

Yes, through Broadcast message streams for newsletters and announcements. It has no segmentation, A/B testing, or journey builder. SendGrid's separate Marketing Campaigns plan includes those tools.

Do Postmark and SendGrid offer dedicated IPs?

SendGrid includes a dedicated IP on its Pro plan, from $89.95 a month for 100,000 emails. Postmark offers dedicated IPs for $50 a month each to Pro and Platform customers sending at least 300,000 emails a month.
