Email Deliverability Benchmarks for 2026, Explained

Validity measured 87.2% global inbox placement during 2025, with an important limitation. Its 2026 report aggregates participating customers' seed tests but does not disclose the number of senders, campaigns, or messages. Treat 87.2% as context for that dataset, not a universal average or bounce rate.

EmailTooltester measured 83.1% in a separate January 2024 shared-IP seed test: five tests over five weeks across 15 platforms. Its round page says 30-plus mailbox providers, while the general methodology says roughly 80 seeds across 28. The methods and populations differ, so the two rates should not be averaged.

The four rates people call "deliverability"

Most benchmark arguments begin with two people using the same word for different measurements.

If 1.5% of messages bounce, a dashboard can show 98.5% “delivered.” That says nothing about how much accepted mail reached spam. A high delivered rate and a lower inbox-placement rate can both be true.

Open rate belongs in a different category. Apple's Mail Privacy Protection can privately download remote content and prevent senders from reliably seeing whether a user opened an email. Opens can help with directional analysis, but they are not a clean inbox-placement test.

A single account-wide rate can hide a Microsoft regression behind stronger Gmail results. Segment by the mailbox providers your audience actually uses.

How did inbox placement vary by region?

Europe led Validity's 2025 regional data at 91.1%, while Asia was lowest at 86.4%. These are weighted properties of Validity's customer dataset, not geographic guarantees. Audience mix, local mailbox providers, regulation, and sender mix differ across regions.

Germany reached 97.5% in the report while India measured 71.0%, a 26.5 percentage-point gap. Europe and South America total 99.9% because the report rounds each component.

How did inbox placement vary by industry?

Validity's industry results ranged from 97.2% for Transportation to 80.1% for Real Estate. The table is useful as context for programs represented in Validity's data. It isn't a forecast for a new sender in the same industry.

For product email, segment at least these classes separately:

  • Authentication: password resets, magic links, verification codes.
  • Transactional: receipts, order updates, security alerts.
  • Lifecycle: onboarding, activation reminders, feature education.
  • Promotional: newsletters, launches, offers.

These classes differ in urgency, expectation, and complaint risk. A blended average turns distinct operational problems into one vague number.

What counts as a good rate in 2026?

There is no useful universal threshold until the metric is named. For accepted delivery, investigate hard bounces and sudden deferrals. For inbox placement, use 87.2% as market context, not a service-level agreement (SLA); your segmented trend is the better benchmark.

For complaints, mailbox providers publish clearer limits:

  • Google's sender FAQ says bulk senders should keep user-reported spam below 0.1% and prevent it from reaching 0.3% or higher.
  • Yahoo's sender best practices require bulk senders to keep spam complaints below 0.3%.

These are enforcement guardrails, not goals. A 0.1% rate is one complaint per 1,000 messages in the measured denominator.

Google permanently classifies a domain as bulk after it crosses the threshold. Microsoft began enforcing its high-volume rules in May 2025. Google and Yahoo apply one-click unsubscribe to marketing or subscribed mail, not password resets and order confirmations.

Why a provider leaderboard cannot predict your result

An email platform influences infrastructure, authentication, suppressions, and logs. Your result also depends on:

  • the reputation of your domain and IP;
  • whether SPF, DKIM, and DMARC pass and align;
  • list acquisition, consent, and stale-address removal;
  • message class, content, links, and sending cadence;
  • complaint and engagement history;
  • shared versus dedicated IP behavior;
  • the receiving providers in your audience.

How should you benchmark your own program?

  1. Define the denominator: Decide whether inbox rate uses sent, accepted, or observed seed messages, then keep it stable.
  2. Split the traffic: Separate authentication, transactional, lifecycle, and promotional mail. Then split by mailbox provider.
  3. Connect events to outcomes: Record delivery events alongside account verification, receipt views, sign-ins, or other product outcomes.
  4. Use stable seed tests: Hold the recipient set, domain, message, timing, and IP conditions steady across several rounds.
  5. Monitor provider signals: Use Google Postmaster Tools, Yahoo's Complaint Feedback Loop, and Microsoft response codes.

Use 87.2% for broad 2025 context, 83.1% for EmailTooltester's January 2024 test, and Google's 0.1% and 0.3% figures for Gmail complaint risk. For an operational decision, use your own segmented trend. It is the only benchmark that tells you what to fix.

Google says bulk senders should stay below 0.1% and prevent their user-reported spam rate from ever reaching 0.3% or higher. Yahoo requires bulk senders to remain below 0.3%. These are enforcement thresholds, not performance goals; lower is safer.

Which mailbox provider is hardest for email deliverability?

In Validity's 2025 dataset, Microsoft had the lowest inbox-placement rate of the four large providers shown: 77.4%, compared with Apple at 82.0%, Yahoo at 87.3%, and Gmail at 89.8%. Your result can differ materially because sender reputation, audience, message type, and mailbox mix all matter.

How should I test my own email deliverability?

Separate accepted, inbox, spam, missing, bounce, and complaint metrics; test the same message against a stable seed list; segment results by mailbox provider; monitor Gmail Postmaster Tools and Yahoo's Complaint Feedback Loop; and compare several weeks rather than one campaign. Do not treat an open-rate change as proof of an inbox-placement change.
